Kargil: Traditional folk songs and folk tales amid daman and surna reverberated here at a colorful cultural extravaganza titled “Kargil Losar Festival” (Traditional New Year of Ladakh) at Tourist Dak Bungalow Mulbekh Kargil.

The Kargil Losar festival (Traditional New Year of Ladakh)  was a part of the series of initiatives being taken by J&K Cultural Academy Kargil Ladakh to preserve and sustain the invaluable pieces of folk literature of Kargil area thus saving them from going into oblivion.

This Colorful Cultural Programme specially organized on the occasion of Ladakh region Traditional New Year locally called Losar, besides also aim to provide platform to the Purgi, Balti, and Dardi/Shina folk artists representing the areas spread across Kargil district to present glimpses of their flamboyant folk songs and folklore in their traditional music and dance forms.

Organized under the aegis of Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Kargil Ladakh the day long colorful cultural event saw in attendance 11 cultural troupes numbering 165 artists from different areas of Kargil District like Hardass, Wakha, Mulbekh, Kukshow, Bodh Kharboo, Darchiks, Hanaskote, Chiktan and Drass. The colorful cultural dance / performance mesmerized the mammoth gathering of cultural enthusiasts with their folk music, folk lore and folk dance forms and won thundering rounds of applause.

Muhammad Hussain, Executive Councilor, Health & Agriculture, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, chaired the occasion.

Hussain at the occassion said that there is an urgent need to take steps in sustaining and preserving the glorious folk literature of Kargil which comprises of folk songs and folk tales based on social and moral ethos, communal harmony, peaceful coexistence, decency and he assured all possible help by LAHDC, Kargil for organizing such vibrant colorful cultural festival in different blocks of the districts. So that rich cultural and traditional ethos will get their share due.

The rich colorful Kargil Losar Festival was concluded with incredible theatre play performed by Ranthak Theater Group Kargil, in which they aimed at creating awareness among the public regarding social evils- misuse of electricity, dowry system and other evils in the society.
