Srinagar | Feb 23: A Jamaat-e-Islami leader was taken by surprise after his name figured in the list of people who met interlocutor Dineshwar Sharma on Friday at Kulgam.
Around 13 delegations met Sharma in south Kashmir’s volatile Kulgam district.
Sharma, who is on a three day visit to Kashmir, arrived in Kulgam early in the morning amid tight security. The Office of the Deputy Commissioner Kulgam released the list of the people/delegations who had sought appointment with Sharma. The name of president Jamaat-e-Islami Kulgam district Mohammad Yousuf Rather also figured in the list, who according to the official document met Sharma at 3:30 in the afternoon.
However, the Jamaat leader, Rather blamed DC Kulgam Talat Parvez Rohella for misleading him.
“I got a call from DC Kulgam that there was some seminar on teaching and I was also invited. Once I reached, I was asked to meet Dineshwar Sharma,” he said.
Rather said once he reached the DC office, he was insisted by the officers there to meet Sharma, which he refused. “The DC kept on insisting me to meet Sharma. I was misled by the DC. I will sue him in the court,” he said.
He said that he has not seen the official document that mentioned his name among those who have sought appointment to meet the interlocutor. “If it is true…I will sue the DC for defaming me as it is against the political stand of our party taken on the appointment of Dineshwar Sharma. I can’t go beyond party lines. If someone proves that I have met Sharma…I am ready to be hanged in Lal Chowk,” he said.
Clarifying it further, Jamaat spokesman Advocate Zahid Ali said that the district president Kulgam had visited the DC office in his official Bolero vehicle which was seen by the people also entering into the Deputy Commissioners complex.
“But he (Rather) was taken by surprise when he was insisted to meet Sharma. He didn’t meet anyone and left the venue,” Ali added.
The media persons were not allowed to cover the meeting and they were stopped at the main gate of the District Commissioner’s office. The media association Kulgam said they boycotted the coverage of Sharma’s visit as a mark of protest.
Deputy Commissioner Kulgam Talat Parvez Rohella said that the jamaat leader was invited for a different meeting on some teaching. “He didn’t meet Sharma neither he attended the teaching function when he came to know about Sharma,” he said.
Rohella further said that since Sharma was here, so those who visited to his office for the seminar “I asked them if they want to meet Sharma as well.” “Since Rather left and didn’t meet anyone. Also his name got included in the list wrongly,” Rohella added.
